Indonesia shares land boundaries with East Timor, Malaysia,
and Papua New Guinea. Other near countries comprises of Australia, Philippines,
Singapore, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Fossils and the remains of tools display that the
Indonesian archipelago was populated by Homo erectus, prevalently recognized as
the "Java Man", between 1.5 million years ago and as lately as 35,000
years ago.
Indonesia's home motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika"
("Unity in Diversity" literally, "many, yet one"), enunciates
the mixture that forms the country. Even with its large population and tightly
populated regions, Indonesia has massive expanses of wilderness that support
the world's second highest level of biodiversity. The country has plentiful
natural resources, yet scarceness remains common.
